It’s your wedding day! Don’t forget to have fun!
If formal and traditional ain’t your style, this is the blog for you! Just because you’re getting married doesn’t mean you have to pull out the official wedding rule book and start following everything it says. There are plenty of ways to ditch convention and incorporate your own style and personality into the day. It is, after all, your wedding, not a photo shoot or an Emily Post model event designed to show the masses how weddings “should” be done. You’re in charge, so do what you want! Include all the fun wedding ideas you want to make the day uniquely “You!”
So, you want something different? Maybe you’re the outdoorsy, creative types who love to do things with a wink. You don’t take yourselves too seriously, so why should your wedding look as if you do? Maybe you’re not even all that outdoorsy, but your wedding is in a locale that is. So what to do? Have fun with it! Take a look at what one quirky, creative couple did to embrace their surroundings and show their sense of humor and fun.
Some fun wedding ideas that will get your guests talking!
It started with the lake, the perfect spot to exchange vows. Then the inspiration just flowed from there. (Oh, if only it had been a river!) The couple chose some whimsical touches like an orange heart piñata with their initials, and wedding-themed Mad Libs instead of a guest book. That probably made for some interesting reading after the honeymoon, since I’m gonna guess most people filled those out after sampling the beverages on hand. Then there were the Koozies. Yes, Koozies, personalized to guide guests to their tables, while still perfectly functional to keep all those beverages sufficiently chilled. When presented in the right way, an item like this can go from tacky gas-station-impulse buy to fun, funny wedding favor (that your friends will probably use again!).
You can glam it up while you ham it up! (Did I just actually say that?)
So once they actually “went there” with the Koozies, there was nothing they needed to hold back on! That doesn’t mean they seated their guests in folding camping chairs, but they did have marshmallows for roasting in the evening. Nor did they wear formal wedding attire. She chose a gorgeous crisp cotton strapless dress with a high-low hemline and an orange satin ribbon at the waist. He wore a beautiful suit with an orange tie and boutonniere, something he’ll definitely wear again. They looked like a modern, stylish couple — who were thoroughly enjoying their day!
All those outdoorsy, rustic touches didn’t mean they sacrificed style and elegance. Their reception was — where else? — in a tent! It was decorated beautifully and simply, with lots of lights and lanterns (the pretty kind, not the “Wow, this campground is dark at night!” kind). So as you can see, you can go in so many different directions when you’re planning your special day. There are so many fun wedding ideas that you might not even think of as “wedding ideas” at first. But as long as what you do reflects who you are as a couple, it’s going to work!

If you’ve been one of my loyal blog followers, you know that we publish these image roundups weekly. We feature a particular event for a particular client so you can go deep on the particular theme. If you know what’s up, skip this part. New visitors, take a look below…
In case you missed it, here’s what we’re doing, mentioned in the first blog. (And if you already know what’s going on, skip to the first photo!) Every day we’re posting event photos & inspiration to my Instagram page to give you ideas for your own events. And, of course, to encourage you to hire yours truly, wedding coordinator extraordinaire, for your next soirée! In terms of format, we’re trying to capitalize on the whole hashtag calendar world and take advantage of #WeddingWednesday (#WW) and #ThrowbackThursday (#TBT) by posting wedding photos and cool stuff we’ve done on Wednesdays and on Thursdays, harkening back to a past client’s event, be it a celebrity, or just one of us tastemakers.
Favorite Event Photos and Inspiration – Monday:
Think fast! When I say “wedding favors,” what comes to mind? Koozies? Wait, that’s not what you thought of? You’re not even sure what that is? Hmmm… think back a few years… Most of you probably know a Koozie when you see one. But for those uninitiated to the world of needing to keep your canned beverage chilled while you enjoy the great outdoors, well, I’ve just described it for you. This was just one of the many fun wedding ideas this creative couple had (though they classed it up by ditching the cans). The drinks stayed cold and everyone loved their take-home gift!
Favorite Event Photos and Inspiration – Tuesday:
When you’re searching for fun wedding ideas on Pinterest, there are more possibilities than you can shake a stick at! So if you want something a little different — that you definitely didn’t see at the last country club wedding you attended — something that says “Us,” why not have something you literally can shake a stick at? I just loved this heart piñata with the couple’s initials! It added a pop of color outside and left some people wondering if a stick was actually going to be produced! So fun, and kinda funny!
Favorite Event Photos and Inspiration – Wednesday:
This bride wasn’t afraid of a little nature getting on her dress! After all, they chose to get married in a lakeside ceremony under the trees. Guests threw leaf confetti as the happy couple walked down the aisle. It was colorful, playful and none too stuffy! Happy #WeddingWednesday!
Favorite Event Photos and Inspiration – Thursday:
This photo may not make the newspaper in the wedding announcement section, but it will definitely make the wedding album and every family slideshow for the rest of time. Because what a great photo! The groom and his bride were a fun couple and weren’t afraid to be silly. Their wedding day reflected their sense of humor to a tee. Can’t you tell?! #TBT
Favorite Event Photos and Inspiration – Friday:
Talk about fun wedding ideas! It’s Mad Libs, wedding edition! The bridal couple decided to forgo the traditional guest book — just one of many wedding staples they skipped — in favor of a fun, creative way to remember their guests by. With drinks flowing — kept frosty-cool with personalized Koozies (see Monday’s post) — guests put pen to paper to offer sage or tipsy advice! “On your first anniversary, make sure you __________.” Now that’s a “guest book” I’d love to read!
Favorite Event Photos and Inspiration – Saturday:
When it came to dessert, this bride and groom wanted something small, cute and unexpected. They were so close to picking petits fours, which are totally cute. But somehow, those didn’t quite meld with the tongue-in-cheek, outdoorsy feel they were going for. And besides, petits fours don’t stay on a stick very well. So naturally they went with marshmallows. Much more unexpected!
