“White is only for summer, ideally before Labor Day.” When’s the last time you heard that outdated rule? Maybe circa 19__ (you fill in the decade) when Miss Manners was still wearing shoes that exactly matched her handbag? (Yes, ladies did that.) Well lucky for us, white is a year-round color! It’s not like it disappears from sight once we hit September. There’s snow (OK, not where I live, but still…), flowers, white pants (after Labor Day even!), white wine (with red meat!)… we can enjoy white whenever we want! This week, I was looking back at photos from a beautiful summer party and felt inspired by the color white. In a nod to poor Miss Manners — I don’t want her to feel too irrelevant or choke on her Chardonnay — I’m very appropriately referring to it as winter white. I think she would approve.
White & blue: seasonless, timeless, gorgeous!
I planned a party for clients who wanted lots of whites and blues. So we took inspiration from the ocean and from colors at their home to create a lush, natural style for the flower arrangements, cake and other decorations. It was a look you could easily have right now in the middle of January. All you need are winter white flowers and some creativity. Put on your favorite white jeans and pour a glass of Chard and you’re totally set!
If you’ve been one of my loyal blog followers, you know that we publish these image roundups weekly. We feature a particular event for a particular client so you can go deep on the particular theme. If you know what’s up, skip this part. New visitors, take a look below…
In case you missed it, here’s what we’re doing, mentioned in the first blog. (And if you already know what’s going on, skip to the first photo!) Every day we’re posting event photos & inspiration to my Instagram page to give you ideas for your own events. And, of course, to encourage you to hire yours truly, event coordinator extraordinaire, for your next soirée! In terms of format, we’re trying to capitalize on the whole hashtag calendar world and take advantage of #WeddingWednesday (#WW) and #ThrowbackThursday (#TBT) by posting wedding photos and cool stuff we’ve done on Wednesdays and on Thursdays, harkening back to a past client’s event, be it a celebrity, or just one of us tastemakers.
Favorite Event Photos and Inspiration – Monday:
A white-on-white floral arrangement is just so simple and beautiful. Add a touch of green for contrast and it’s perfection! I love this combination of hydrangeas and orchids. Can’t decide if it’s making me think of classic winter white or flowy summer linen at the beach. Maybe it’s seasonless! What do you think?
Favorite Event Photos and Inspiration – Tuesday:
Christmas trees aren’t the only trees for hanging decorations! A mini manzanita tree makes a striking focal point for a tabletop display. And it’s even more stunning with winter white orchids suspended in glass balls, with blue hydrangeas tucked in below. #LOVE it!
Favorite Event Photos and Inspiration – Wednesday:
Winter white & blue never looked so pretty! Even though this photo is from a summer birthday party, you can find these same flowers any time of year. This display is so gorgeous and lush, it could easily be a wedding centerpiece. In fact, seeing it made me (almost!) want to have another wedding of my own! #WeddingWednesday
Favorite Event Photos and Inspiration – Thursday:
How do you like this amazing birthday cake? The winter white on top and deep ocean blue at the bottom would work perfectly in any season! It looks too good to eat, but birthday cake is meant to be eaten. And btw, it was delicious! #TBT!
Favorite Event Photos and Inspiration – Friday:
I’m loving this arrangement! Creamy winter white hydrangeas, spiky blue thistle, delicate green orchids and roses — it’s a study of contrasts that all work together to make a harmonious and stunning display. Think how beautiful this would look on your table!
Favorite Event Photos and Inspiration – Saturday:
Hydrangeas are the ideal flower for making an eye-catching centerpiece. This winter white variety is especially versatile. Mix them with blooms of every size, color and texture for a lush look. Or, take advantage of their long stems and place them in a tall glass vase for a modern, elegant feel, like in this photo. Hard to go wrong with a flower that looks like a puffy ball of petals! Or from this angle, maybe even an ice cream cone!
