What the Funk? The Sociability of The Social Network

We have another WTF for you as we scratch our heads in wonderment. The Social Network took home top honors last Sunday at the Golden Globes, so we thought it might finally be time to give it two hours of hour time.

Yes, it was brilliant, Aaron Sorkin’s writing plus David Fincher’s directing left us breathless, but the story of Mark Zuckerburg, the founding father of Facebook, left us astonished. Zuckerburg is portrayed as one of the most socially awkward college students, who then goes on to create the most profitable ‘social website.’

So in person social awkwardness equates to mega millions in online social mobility? We started to look at the profiles on Facebook as one upgrade from an Avatar, a graphical representation of yourself that you create to interact with other people’s Avatar’s on cyberspace.  Has society retreated from the dinner table conversation to online interaction, where you pretend your alter ego is your reality?

Not to mention, Facebook was created with the intention to be used for college campuses, upon inception had to have a college email to join, but apparently, nothing has changed since college, as everyone jumped on the profile stalking bandwagon.

While Facebook provides great publicity through status updates, may we suggest making a status update in person from time to time? The art of conversation is dying fast and we will be so bold to say we look better in person than our cartooned Avatar. Not to mention there is now a trend going around called “status jacking,” where you can call someone out who comments on your status in a way that brings attention to themselves. Oh, we’re sorry, but isn’t that conversation? A mix of ideas and perspectives through the lobbying of words back and forth, attention patiently being paid to the one that is speaking? If you just want pity or accolades every time you announce something to the world, go back to high school.
