Four Rules for Father’s Day Tie Shopping

Men often joke about getting yet another tie for Father’s Day. A tie can easily be perceived as nothing more than an old standby that makes him feel like you didn’t much thought into his gift. Let’s face it. Sometimes he’s right. A tie, like any other gift, can be thoughtless.

But let’s also keep in mind, a well-dressed man honestly needs good ties. What better time than Father’s Day to add a stylish new tie to his wardrobe?

Men wear ties when they want or need to look professional, sophisticated, or respectful of tradition, so buying a tie is not the time to be a penny pincher. Quality is paramount. Of course you can catch a good sale, but no man wants to be caught wearing a cheap looking tie.

Here are some tips for tie buying to keep in mind:

1. Fabric:

The best ties are made of silk. There are varying degrees of silk weight and quality, though. Go for a heavier weight woven silk so it will drape well, but light enough to avoid a bulky knot. The tie’s lining should be wool or a poly cotton blend.

2. Shape:

Tie widths and lengths change with the trends. Though more fashion-forward dads may be able to pull off a skinnier tie, a medium-width tie is the prevailing more conservative look. The tie should be cut in a bottleneck or half-bottleneck shape so the knot will lay properly.

3. Construction:

Look over the tie carefully to make sure it is constructed well. Many mass-produced ties would not pass closer inspection by a discerning eye. Check the fabric for loose threads, make sure the edges are straight and symmetrical, run your fingers along the silk to make certain it isn’t lumpy, and eye the threading on the back of the tie for neatness.

4. Colors and Patterns:

The best colors and patterns depend almost entirely upon taste and his existing shirt and suit wardrobe. If you expect the tie will be worn mostly for business, go for a solid color or stripes. Busier and more interesting patterns are best worn in relaxed settings. If you are buying a shirt or suit to accompany the tie, be mindful of rules for the right shirt/tie combinations.

If your favorite guy could use another good tie, by all means give him one he can proudly wear. Unless you know for sure he would find the humor in sporting a cheesy “#1 Dad” tie the next day at work, opt for something more sophisticated. Again, you don’t have to break the bank. Just be careful not to waste money on a crummy cheap throwaway tie.
