WTF; The Chicken and The Egg…in Business

We have all been asked the question, ‘which comes first, the chicken or the egg?’ But not until recently have we noticed how that paradigm translates into our business savvy lives. When embarking on a career, or changing career paths, how do you crack that egg? Many employers will tell you need experience in their field to be hired, but how do you gain experience if no one will hire you?

A recent college graduate interviewing at an advertising agency will be assumed to have a portfolio, how else will the agency know his or her aesthetic style? But how will a recent college graduate amass such a portfolio without their first job under their belt?

The only conclusion we can come to is three pronged. Networking, internships and mentoring. Networking allows the employers to become familiar with the interns while still in college, hopefully fostering a symbiotic mentorship that can turn into something financially beneficial, or simply further networking… egg cracked.
