Kids can go a little stir crazy in the heat of the summer. Pool time and beach time are great options for entertainment and cooler temperatures, but are not always at your disposal. During our Internet wanderings over our morning coffee, we came across some great ideas to beat the heat and keep the kids entertained while providing snacks for all!
*Wiggly Watermelons: This fun activity produces dessert for your dinner tonight! Cut a watermelon in half and scoop out the insides, leaving only the green rind. Boil 5 cups of water and add 4 6oz packages of strawberry gelatin and mix well. Pour mixture into the shell of the watermelon and place in refrigerator. Before mix is completely set, use skewers to push chocolate chips throughout the watermelon— and remember to tell the kids, they can eat these seeds!
*Apple Smiles: Another yummy treat that gets kids to eat their fruits! Cut apples into wedge slices and spread peanut butter onto one side of each apple wedge. Place mini-marshmallows onto one wedge of the peanut buttered apple, creating the teeth. Top off with another wedge of apple and you’ve got yourself a row of pearly whites.
*Marshmallow Dip Sticks: Another fun marshmallow recipe that allows dessert to become a fun activity as well as a sweet reward. Take pretzel sticks and insert into marshmallows. Dip marshmallows into peanut butter and set aside on wax paper. Melt chocolate over the stove and then re-dip marshmallow into melted chocolate and top off with toppings of your choice—anything from sprinkles to crushed peanuts!
