Classic For Kids
Whenever it’s National Grilled Cheese Day, I take a trip down memory lane to the grilled cheese of my youth. Remember those thin square slices of American cheese (not actually real cheese) wrapped in wax paper? Well, that’s how our school lunch truck served ‘em and they were DELISH! It’s as if that processed wonder was designed exclusively for melting on burgers or insertion between two slices of white bread to create every kid’s favorite grilled cheese sandwich.
Gourmet For Grown Ups
But, we’ve come a long way since those days… THANK GAWD!! Grilled Cheese Sandwiches are all grown up and gourmet now, made with fancy melters like Brie and Old Amsterdam, layered with other savory goodies such as bacon, avocados, and onion marmalade! To celebrate National Grilled Cheese Day, restaurants everywhere feature their own rendition of this ooey-gooey favorite.
Want to know what I like even better? Local eateries serving this scrumptious comfort food on the menu EVERY DAY! Like Melt It! a restaurant in my neighborhood that specializes in excessive cheesy-ness! Not only do they have an exclamation point in their name (like me!), they serve simple classics like cheddar melted on sourdough AND they do bat-sh*t crazy numbers like The Lars, made with roasted jalapeños, cream cheese, melted cheddar and bacon, or The Mac N’ Cheese which is a grilled cheese sandwich stuffed with mac n’ cheese and pulled pork!
I mean, all of these things are like biting into a massive coronary, but they’re also freakin’ DELICIOUS! If you’re going to put something in your mouth to celebrate National Grilled Cheese Day, one of these bad boys is for sure it!
National Grilled Cheese Day—it’s not for the lactose intolerant! (pity!) But if you want to stop the world (and pick me up a sammy!) I’ll melt with you! (yes, that’s a Modern English joke!)
