The specialty cocktail lists found at our favorite bars have been becoming more complex by the minute. This questionable ingredient called Saint Germain is notoriously elusive, yet when we do get our hands on it we love it.
What it is; Saint Germain is French liquor, made in the traditional French manner, from hand picked elder flowers. When mixed with other liquors, it gives off a slightly sweet, slightly floral taste. It is a great substitute for the overly sweet mixer of simple syrup. It also packs a stronger punch than simple syrup, because you are not diluting your cocktail with sugar water.
The traditional way to drink it is with 2 parts champagne, 1 ½ parts Saint Germain, and 2 parts club soda.
Our favorite way to drink it is with Grey Goose Le Poire (pear flavored Grey Goose) and a splash of grapefruit juice, not too sweet, not too tart, but just right.
