The Candy Bar

The Babe was born George Herman Ruth. It remains a serious mystery why a guy as big a’round as George earned the nickname Babe. When gangsters call somebody Tiny, are they really tiny? Or, are they the size of George and just called Tiny? Anyhoo…

As a right fielder for the Yankees, Babe Ruth set super slugger records and was the first player to hit 60 home runs in one season. But the reason he got his own day and the crunchy, peanut-filled, caramel-chocolate goodness that is the Baby Ruth candy bar was because the dude was a total rock star. The O.G. of celebrity athletes decades before DiMaggio, and a lifetime before the likes of Shaq and Eli Manning. Babe made the game exciting! Which meant he was recognized on the streets and asked for autographs. (Because there were no selfies back then. But if there had been, he totally would have posed for those too!!)

In typical celebrity-athlete fashion, Babe liked to drink and get crazy! Umm, who doesn’t?! He must have liked to eat too. Both activities I can totally get behind. And since you all know I LOVE candy, here are some party ideas that include Baby Ruth candy bars, which I think is a great way to celebrate Babe Ruth Day! Because unless you’re into ghosts, you can’t really call up the man at this point and invite him over to your soiree. Rest assured, if moonshine was being served, he would have loved to have come!

Having a Baby Shower?

Put Baby Ruth candy bars in a bowl and let it do double-duty as a centerpiece and sweets! If the mommy-to-be’s name is Ruth, all the better.

Searching For A Clever Halloween Costume?

Create a baseball zombie costume! Here’s how: apply make-up to make you look like the undead. Then, dress in a Yankees uniform where a pillow stuffed stomach is “ripped” open (and dyed red) to expose “intestines” made from a chain of Baby Ruth candy bars linked together.

No time to throw a bash today? Maybe it’s the perfect excuse to head out to the ballgame and cheer on your local team! Whatever you do, remember to raise a glass in honor of Babe Ruth Day!
