How to Decide the Music for Your Party

Let’s face it we’re all busy. That’s why every reporter that ever calls me and tons of cool articles from magazines like Cosmo to Real Simple feature “tips and tricks.” There are entire shows dedicated to shortcuts, getting this or that look for less or just having to get less involved. So where am I going with this?

At The Party Goddess! we are full service psychiatrists, I mean caterers and event planners. Because of that we get involved in every aspect of an event. Music is a HUGE part of any event. You wouldn’t play “Jump!” at a funeral and you certainly wouldn’t play Mozart at your next rager. But how do you know what to play? Well, I’m having my own blow out in a couple of weeks and need to figure out the same thing. What to do? Two things and these are the only two things you need to do. First, ask your dj or band for their most commonly requested song list. Any real disc jockey will have one. These lists are great because they jar your memory and inspire all kinds of “Oh yeahs!” Do this a few weeks before your event so you’re not stressed out. Circle all of your favorite songs. This will help your dj get a feel for what you like and the direction you’d like to take the party.

Second and most importantly, here’s my new favorite idea! Turn on your favorite radio station, pull out some index cards and write down the songs that come on that just totally inspire you. Don’t do this the day before your party. Give it some time. My new to die for radio station in LA is Jack FM ( www.931jackfm.com ). I found it by accident. They have this wonderful irreverant style that I just love. They play all of these random songs that I love but would never in a million years have thought of. So whether you’re planning your next bash of just looking for a new cool station to park your presets, check out JackFM. Great job guys!
