How To Become an Event Planner

Approximately 5,000 times/day I am asked: How can I become an event planner? It looks so glamorous and so much fun. I want celebrity clients. How did you get them? I’m amazing at planning events, am super organized/planned my sister’s wedding. You get it. Well ladies and gentlemen, let me show you what it’s REALLY like to be an event planner. The underbelly of what really happens in this super glamourous world. (Note: I used the English spelling of glamourous because we seem to think anything English is even more fabulous. So please don your special accent when you read this.)

Anyway, here’s an email I got when I got up this morning from my director of operations, sent at God-knows-what time-last night. I swear, the only thing I’ve altered are a couple of names (to protect the innocent).

Dig in!

Subject: Load out from yesterday – Good news, bad news [Note from MM: Always love a subject line with the words, “bad news” prominently displayed.]

Marley -Wanted to give you a heads up – Good news: Team worked great together to get everything loaded into truck by about 5pm and the truck was completely filled finished unloading @ [client]’s by 8:30. Bad news: As the truck was pulling out – the gate started to close and was caught on the back of the truck. No one was hurt [Note from MM: This should’ve said – “no one was hurt by your pocketbook”, but I’ll put the snarkiness down for a sec] but the gate is damaged and does not close [Note from MM: Of course it doesn’t! Yippee!], I told the driver to take the stuff to the site to be unloaded since it was after 5 and the team was headed over there we needed to get it done.

I found the number for the gate company in the Bible and tried to call them but the mailbox was full. Let me know who you want to call to come out and assess the damage to the gate and I will follow up.

Went over to make sure Load Out was going OK – The truck could not go up the driveway so they had to unload at the bottom of the driveway into *&X@’s truck drive & hand carry everything up. [Note from MM: Ca-ching, ca-ching for Marley’s pocketbook!]

I went back to the office around 7pm to check how *&X@ was doing and she and I finished up around 9:00.

Before leaving I double checked all the doors and secured the front door gate and set the alarm.

Bit more bad news [MM: Ca-ching!] – I parked on the street to make room for the truck and came out after the gate accident to go to *&X@’s and found my driver’s side mirror broken off and hanging. [Note from MM: More ca-ching!!] Earlier in the day *&X@ one of our interns was throwing up and sick and went home about 3:00; *&X@ another intern called about 9PM in tears can not make it on Friday her [family member] is having surgery and [other family member] just diagnosed with cancer. Right after the gate and my car I had a meltdown and yelled at *&X@, [Note from MM: Workers’ comp claim for stress comin’ for sure!] Good News: she and I worked everything out late last night and our team is together and working strong despite the challenges and one broken gate. And Jessica Pancake was the glue holding us together…[I left that name in because my girl JP is ROCKING IT.]

All in all not a bad day [Note from MM: NOT A BAD DAY??? I’m calling my psychiatrist right now just reading the damn thing.]

Everyone is headed to set up @ 8am this morning and I am headed to the office to check bank accounts, emails and make sure we have candy, Smart & Final run covered, coordinate getting the door picked up and make sure the team has what they need to do set up. T&C will be back this afternoon to finish up and do a light check later.

That’s all I have for now will keep you posted through out the day and Jessica will make certain you get pictures of the set up.

Now, this poor opps chick of mine had to go home last night, she only drinks wine and instead did a SHOT of tequila and smoked a cigar IN HER NEW APARTMENT because she no longer cared about anything in the world, least of all the smell of the cigar on her new coach.

  1. MM – this is making me laugh because it brings back such memories. I now teaching the gen of event professionals and always laugh when they say they want a “glam job”. If they realised how much of it involved paperwork, desk work, headache, heartache and backache they’d probably think again. So after taking my intro session, if they’re still gung-ho, I usually deem them as having what it takes! ha ha Hopefully your pocketbook isn’t too overstretched and you managed to ge the gate (among other things) sorted. Cheers for the blog!
