A Kid-Friendly Thanksgiving

Decorating the house for fall, preparing a thorough guest list of friends and family, and cooking up an entire Thanksgiving feast are some of Thanksgiving’s many chores. Has anyone had time to think about what the kids are doing to do on Turkey Day? Make it a holiday to remember for the kids with these fun and easy tips!

* Reclaim and recycle! Take a nature walk with the children and have them collect fallen autumn leaves, branches, pinecones, acorns – anything that can be used as decor. Have them use the objects they found to fill vases for centerpieces or to sprinkle on tabletops, cluster on the buffet, and even pin to your guest towels. Top with flowers in complementary fall shades.

* Kid-friendly crafts. Part of the children’s table can include colorful leaves to create an arts and crafts project, and it’s a perfect way to get the adults involved too! Make a “thankful” Thanksgiving tree out of construction paper and leaves and have everyone write down what they are grateful for.

* Lights, camera, action! Gather the children together to create the show of a lifetime! Give them a topic, like “The Meaning of Thanksgiving” or “The Indians and Pilgrims” and have them create a little skit that will be performed in front of everyone before the dinner feast. Provide them with props to help their creativity.

* Get “crafty” helpers. Create unique and memorable place cards for your guests by having the children use mini pumpkins! Let the kids design and write the names of each guest on a mini pumpkin and place them on the dining table. Give them stickers, ribbons, and markers so that they can get really creative.

* Go all out – for cheap! Hang fun vinyl wall decals. They are temporary, customizable, cheaper than buying artwork, and a lot of fun! Use the chalkboard kind so the kids can also “write on the walls” as part of the décor.
