You know how people say they don’t like Mondays? Well, that’s just because they haven’t added mezcal to their day! So, I’m officially declaring it Mezcal Monday. Which is super convenient because we’re gearing up for a taco extravaganza this Wednesday to celebrate National Taco Day! Since there’s no better way to fiesta up those tacos than with a cocktail, we decided to make mezcal their pairing partner and help you enjoy the most dreaded part of your work week all at the same time!
This amazingly smoky spirit is made from the agave plant (kind of like tequila’s distant cousin!) and creates very distinct cocktails because of its rustic, earthy character. My dear friends Ashley and Jim Walsh, proprietors of Kimo Sabe Mezcal have a bunch of great recipes you can find on their site, but one of my faves is the El Viejito, which similar to a Cadillac margarita, has Grand Marnier in the blend. Here’s how to make one!
El Viejito Cocktail
2 oz. Kimo Sabe Reposado
½ oz. Grand Marnier
½ oz. Ancho Reyes
2 Dashes of Bitters
Orange peel for garnish
Instructions
- Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker
- Add ice and shake
- Strain into a glass over ice and garnish with orange peel
Vegetarian Taco Alert!
Once you start kicking back with these cocktails you’re gonna get hungry! (Duh!) We’ll be serving up a bunch of taco recipes in a few days, but while I was hunting for intriguing new recipes I also wanted to track down some vegetarian tacos since not everyone is a carnivore. I’ve had plenty of delicious potato tacos and some with black beans, but I’ve never had lentil tacos before. If your palate is adventurous, try this one out from Cookie + kate!
