We have been good all week so that we can live it up, American style, this coming Sunday. We want to indulge in everything BBQ, cocktails and desserts! Especially if any of the aforementioned items are infused with patriotism in their coloring of red, white, and blue! Below are some of the fun food items (mostly sweets, our sweet tooth is legendary) that we will be serving at our shindig this weekend!
*Jell-O stars! We will prep two sets of jell-o stars, one for the minors and one for us. We like to see layers in our stars, so we prep two batches of jell-o according to the package (red and blue) and then another batch of white (made from gelatin and condensed milk). Pour red into tray, let set, then pour in white, let set, and top off with blue. We usually put out cookie cutters and let the kids go crazy, cutting out their own shapes from the trays of jell-o.
*For the adult version, we substitute vodka for the recommended amount of water on the jell-o package and use fun molds of ice cube trays! Then there will be no wasted shots!
*Save some of those ice cube molds and throw in blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries into the water and then freeze. They will look great in cocktails and in your pitcher of water on the table.
*When the fireworks start we pull out the ol’ American glory; s’mores! But think beyond the box, we like to substitute white chocolate, or Nutella and banana, even peanut butter and jelly! Keep the necessities (graham cracker and marshmallow) and let your imagination go from there!
*Corn on the cob is must, and most already know the tin foil and butter trick, but we like to kick it up a notch by blending chili powder, oregano, cayenne pepper, garlic salt, and pepper into softened butter, before applying liberally to the corn. The zesty taste is mouth watering.
*Now in terms of burgers, well, that is to each his own. We all know the grill master thinks their version on the classic is the best, our advice is to let them show off their skills while you sit back and relax for a sec!
