Sometimes you want a thick, juicy hamburger. Sometimes you don’t. Or maybe you never eat meat. But, that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on all the barbecue burger fun! Here are five awesome burger alternatives for summer entertaining:
Tuna Burger
Works well with yellow fin, topped with Asian slaw. I like using a brioche roll rather than a bun, and add a little wasabi to the mayo. Don’t trust your improvisational skills? Then, here’s a recipe from Guy Fieri!
Turkey Burger
Top it with Swiss cheese, pickles, fresh cilantro and a schmear made from sour cream, mayonnaise and chipotle chile sauce. Serve on a sesame bun.
Portobello Mushroom Quinoa Veggie Burger
Top with radish sprouts, cucumbers and a sauce made from Greek yogurt, garlic and capers. Bun it whole wheat style. This recipe from Martha will get you started.
White Bean & Sundried Tomato Burger
Crisp on the outside, creamy on the inside! You’ll wanna make these babies in a fry pan on the stove rather than on the grill to get that nice crunchy exterior. Seriously, you’re going to love these! Add lemon juice and zest to the mayo and serve on a simple bun. (Added bonus: these burgers are super healthy and can be refrigerated and eaten over salad greens the next day for lunch!) Here’s the recipe from the geniuses at Food 52.
Eggs Benedict Burger
You can do this as a topper to a traditional meat burger, or skip the meat and eat this mess-wich sans beef. Either way, it’s saucy, gooey fun! Between your bun (ciabatta rolls work good too!) layer cooked asparagus tops, sliced tomatoes, Canadian bacon or peppery smoked bacon strips, one fried egg and hollandaise sauce. Serve it with lots of napkins!
You’re gonna want to wash these numbers down with something cool and refreshing, and these recipes scream vodka lemonade to me! Sounds pretty awesome if not totally gourmet! Bottom line: Get creative. Trick out the classics or try something new at your next summer soiree!
