To this day, I can’t even think of a Piña Colada without hearing that 80s song “If you like Piña Coladas, and getting caught in the rain…” playing incessantly over and over in my head! Good thing I’m a big fan of the cocktail! Today is National Piña Colada Day, so if you’re a fan of Tiki Bars and tropical drunkeness this is your day to party! With flavors of coconut, pineapple, and rum, it’s truly the taste of summer. Speaking of which, here are five of my:
Top 5 Summer Cocktails
Classic Margarita
You can’t go wrong serving a fresh classic margarita. The sweet and sour taste of this south of the border favorite is always light and refreshing. Coat the rim of a glass with Kosher salt (optional). Then mix aged tequila, triple sec, fresh lime juice, superfine sugar and a dash of salt.
Cuban Mojito
This crisp South Beach favorite is a popular summer cocktail for the party crowd. A combination of rum, fresh mint leaves, lime, sugar, and club soda, it’s sure to create a cool, refreshing buzz! Add crushed fresh mint leaves to create an authentic delight.
Pimm’s Cup
A traditional cocktail in England, Pimm’s Cup has recently become more popular in North America. A favorite among Wimbledon-goers, Pimm’s Cup is a mixture of Pimm’s No. 1 (a gin-based, spicy, slightly fruity spirit) and 7-up or Sprite, or lemonade and ginger ale. Top it off with a slice of cucumber and lemon.
Traditional Daiquiri
Said to be Hemingway’s favorite drink, a traditional rum daiquiri is nothing like the strawberry slushies the word daiquiri often calls to mind. Simply shake white rum, freshly squeezed lime juice, and simple syrup. Pour over ice and garnish with a lime wheel.
Piña Colada
Ta-daa! Here’s today’s namesake drink which I’m absolutely certain will transport you to the tropics in just one sip! Skip the pre-made mix and blend it from scratch with pineapple juice, cream of coconut, and light rum. Pour it over crushed ice with a pineapple spear to garnish and enjoy!
