Our Story

Get out the cocktail shaker – this might take a minute.
(And by the way, if all you’re here for is Marley’s bio, click here and save yourself the drama.)

Marley grew up in Pasadena, California, the daughter of kind, smart, conservative parents who were determined to raise reasonable children.
It worked beautifully.
On her brother.

Marley, on the other hand, started selling Shrinky Dinks door-to-door at four. She followed that up with a doll “repair” business (the word repair is doing a lot of heavy lifting here), sold plums out of the backyard, and by seven was washing neighbors’ cars. By thirteen, she had self-published a gift-wrapping book, decorated and sold sweatshirts at her high school holiday bazaar, and decided with absolute certainty that she had to attend Georgetown, where her dad went to medical school.

And then… the wheels fell off the bus.

Somehow accepted to Georgetown (no one knows how), Marley spent the summer after her sophomore year at cooking school in Paris. When she returned to campus, she ran into one of her professors during the first week of classes and proudly announced that for her speech titled “What I Know More About Than Anyone Else,” she would be covering French cooking.

The professor was thrilled.

Marley then casually added that she was pleased to confirm an interview with the chef from 1789 – the famously fancy D.C. restaurant.
This was… not true.
Also unfortunate.

The professor squealed (she was a huge fan), and Marley promptly slunk home (yes, slunk) to inform her roommates that junior year was over before it had even begun. Jesuit education? Toast.

No problem, said the roommate who used to work at 1789. They had a lovely new chef from New York. She could set something up. Crisis averted. White lie to be confessed immediately. Education saved.

Sureeeeeee.

Roommate sets up the appointment with the unnamed chef at 1789. Marley marches over, takes one look at him, and immediately decides she needs to marry him. She’s 19. He’s 38.
Um. Yeah.

She convinces him to give her a job in the kitchen, where she becomes the soufflé girl, working three (sometimes more) nights a week from 3:30–11:30 p.m., right after her classes end at 2:30. The parents are thrilled. Obviously. Marley, meanwhile, makes the Dean’s List.

After a solid year of generously applied mascara, the chef does not ask Marley out. So she heads to cooking school in Normandy the following summer, returns, and quits the soufflé gig before senior year.

That’s when the chef asks her out.

They’re engaged one month after Marley graduates from Georgetown with a business degree. The parents are… only slightly more excited at this point.

Super genius returns to her hometown and opens a restaurant with her new chef hubby in 1992. A catering company follows in 1995 – the same year they have a child. (Brilliant timing.) They take over a banquet facility, raise said child in front of the cappuccino machine, and eventually get divorced. Lots of drama. Not appropriate for a business website.

Then karma shows up in the form of a bad skiing accident. Marley’s father gently suggests she partner with one of the restaurant groups eager to take over the space so she can focus on events. The deal is cut. A new restaurant group moves in. Marley and family remain partners and landlords (thank you, Lord, Jesus, Buddha, and Ganesh). And Marley reinvents herself. Again.

In 2000, The Party Goddess! is born – a full-service catering and event planning company capable of handling any aspect of an event from concept to completion.

And the rest, ladies and gentlemen, is history.
A mottled, slightly psychoanalyzed, mildly traumatized kind of history but history nonetheless.

P.S. She and the chef are still the best of friends. Ridiculous, we know. Imagine living it.
