Father’s Day Party Must-Haves

Father’s Day is coming up, so it’s time to honor our favorite guys. Whether you’re throwing a party for your dad, husband, grandfather, step-dad, brother, father-in-law, or even your ex, here’s the good news. When it comes to a good party, men are pretty simple to please. I hate to generalize, but come on. It’s true.

However, remember to never mistake simple for easy. Father’s Day is a time to celebrate the men who work hard, provide for their families, and who are always there for the people who need them most. Don’t even bother throwing a Father’s Day party if you’re just going to throw something together. Make it a party that the special men in your life deserve.

Here are 5 Father’s Day party must-haves:

1. Fire up the Grill

True enough, I haven’t confirmed this with research, but it’s pretty much a universal. Men love grilling out. Whether your guy enjoys steaks, burgers, ribs, shish kabobs, salmon, or portabella mushrooms, center your menu around the barbecue and he’ll be happy. A word of caution: Some fathers can’t resist being the grill master. If he insists on strapping on an apron and cooking his own meal, humor him.

2. More Grub

Spare him the dainty hors d’œuvres, and offer hearty side dishes. Grill zucchini, garlic potatoes, and stuffed mushrooms. Even if your guy doesn’t normally have a sweet tooth, be sure to have his favorite dessert especially for Father’s Day. Apple pie and ice cream, sundaes, and key lime pie are cool summer favorites.

3. Don’t Forget the Drinks

In addition to hot summer day staples like iced tea and lemonade (or mix the two for an Arnold Palmer), don’t forget to include his favorite adult beverages. Whether he prefers fine wine, a nice microbrew, or good scotch, this is his day. Give him the best.

4. Generous Gifts

Let the kids shower him with their homemade cards and handmade gifts. He’ll love them, but only if he gets something he really wants too (let’s be honest, here). Skip the thoughtless ties and shirts on sale at your local department store, and give him something you know he would like. It doesn’t have to be expensive. Just put as much thought into it as you would like him to put into your gift. Electronics and gifts related to his hobbies are sure to please.

5. Unexpected Entertainment

Surprise him with some unexpected entertainment. Hire a local band to play his favorite tunes; bring out the backyard games –volleyball, badminton, or flag football; set up an outdoor movie theater and show his favorite film; or have the kids put on a play or talent show.

Your loved ones will appreciate your making their day extra special. Focus on the menu and the fun, but don’t make the party anything overly formal or fussy. Father’s Day is an occasion for backyard cookouts, relaxation, and summer fun. If you want to host the party somewhere other than your home, opt for the lake, beach, or poolside. Always entertain in style and create a welcoming atmosphere, but decor should not be your central concern. They’ll hardly notice. Most importantly, have fun! Happy Father’s Day!
